75 Years of Supporting Our Members:
Renwick "Uncle Joe" Tassill and Aunty June Toguchi-Tassill

feb12

Members Since 1989

Uncle Joe Tassill first joined Hawaii State Federal Credit Union in 1989 while working at the State Capitol as an employee of the Governor's Office. He had heard about the benefits of credit union membership and decided to join to build his credit. He would soon discover, however, that his membership would provide him with lifelong benefits that would far exceed his initial expectations. While attending the 1995 Annual Dinner at the Sheraton Waikiki, Uncle Joe met his future wife June Toguchi-Tassill. Francis Iwamoto, a fellow HSFCU member and a mutual friend of the two, introduced them that evening and a lifetime of love and happiness quickly followed. They were married the following year with Francis serving as their best man. Membership with Hawaii State Federal Credit Union has led to years of meaningful relationships for Uncle Joe and Aunty June. They enjoy the friendship and service they receive from the Alii Branch especially from branch manager Roland Ogoshi, teller supervisor Hattie Foster, financial services specialist Kelly Gatioan, and all of the friendly tellers. And they of course enjoy attending the Annual Dinner each year. According to Uncle Joe "You meet the nicest people at the HSFCU Annual Dinner, people you would love to be friends with the rest of your life".

Hawaii State FCU's Annual Meeting and Dinner - A Look Back Over the Years

One of the key factors in Hawaii State Federal Credit Union's growth throughout the years has been its ability to involve its members in credit union activities and functions. The biggest and most visible of these functions has been the Annual Meeting and Dinner. Originally all annual meetings were held at the Kapuaiwa Building (then commonly known as the Board of Health Building) at the corner of Queen Street and Punchbowl Street in downtown Honolulu after working hours. Only a handful of members regularly attended and the meeting lasted at most half an hour. The Board of Directors, volunteers, and members in attendance reviewed the minutes of the previous year's meeting, discussed new business, elected new Board members, and adjourned the meeting with refreshments and prizes.

As the credit union grew rapidly in the late 1960s, interest in the meeting grew to large proportions. To meet the demands of the members the Board decided to initiate dinner meetings with the members paying a portion of the cost and the credit union subsidizing the balance. The first such meeting was held at the Waikiki Lau Yee Chai and attracted 450 members. By the next year the event filled the area to its 1,200 person capacity. The Board responded by moving the dinner to the Ilikai Hotel but quickly filled their space to its 1,700 person capacity. Soon afterwards the Hilton Hawaiian Village opened its Rooftop Garden and HSFCU was one of the first customers to utilize it. 2,000 members attended that dinner at the Hilton and responded with rave reviews. On March 24, 2012, the Hawaii State Federal Credit Union returns to the Hilton Hawaiian Village to celebrate its 75th Anniversary. Come join us to enjoy food, entertainment, door prizes, and to share in our credit union's 75 years of success. We hope to see you there!
